“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” — Robert Swan

Our Responsibility

Operating in an ethical, sustainable, and environmentally responsible manner is a key corner stone of the Isle of Eriska. We are fortunate to be in a position where we have designed, created, and opperate a business which takes its corporate and social responsibility seriously and that has, and will continue to, invest time, resources, and money in creating robust and long-term sustainable policies and relationships.

Eriska is a Category C listed building with a rich and varied past, we have created a business which allows the building to look forward to an exciting new chapter and which will ensure its continued viability for generations to come. At the same time, as a new and innovative hospitality operator, we have the opportunity to set new operating standards that support key pillars of our vision and values. This sets the Isle of Eriska apart through the authenticity of our working practices and relationships:

We aim to create a long standing and mutually beneficial relationship with our community by prior- itising the use of local eco-friendly suppliers from Argyll and Bute and creating wealth and employ- ment for the local community.

Our approach to employee wellbeing is one of our unique aspects and represent a comprehensive and fundamental part of our corporate personality. The Isle of Eriska is committed to understanding, monitoring, and managing our social, environmental, and economic impact both locally and within society as a whole. This commitment is deeply ingrained in our core values, and we aim to demonstrate these responsibilities through our ongoing actions, and our enthusiastic and innovative approach to this policy.

Our key areas of long-term focus:

Minimising our environmental impact and ensuring we operate in a sustainable manner

Implementing ethical employment processes and supporting the wellbeing of all employees

Operating in an economically responsible manner

Making a positive contribution to our local community

Our Environmental Impact

As part of our food procurement policy, we focus on purchasing items that are delivered in glass containers with a view to reducing our consumption of plastic.

All electrically powered lights are replaced by low energy LED light bulbs.

Electric car charging points are available for both guests and team members.

The ability to provide staff accommodation on-site reduces our carbon footprint by minimising car journeys to and from the hotel.

The island has its own water source with part of the water supply for the estate provided by a borehole. Our estate bottled water filtered here on our private island through a sophisticated process that delivers unrivalled purity and taste. Our sustainability effort ensures that there are no food miles and no waste, just pure fresh still or sparkling water in a responsible and reusable glass bottle.

Majority of our food supplies are procured from the local Argyll area where possible, minimising the carbon footprint of our food sourcing. We are working with carefully selected local suppliers to ensure all Meat, Fish, and Poultry is ethically and environmentally reared. Our closest suppliers are our next-door neighbours providing where possible seasonal produce.

Our food waste is reused on site and placed into composting for the estate.

Our plantings (food and flora) are watered by rainwater and island springs.

We use our own island honey and work with master beekeepers to help the bee population.

Many of our hotel main bedrooms have been designed with a separate walk in shower to encourage guests to use the shower instead of the bath, resulting in water saving.

All our internal systems use a chemical dosage dispensers to reduce waste.

We recycle paper, cardboard, glass, and plastics where possible.

Our back of house areas operate on sensor lighting to reduce energy usage where possible.

We have IT systems in place to reduce paper usage – e.g., Flow, Aloha, Rezlynx, ICMI Application for menus and guest information and QR codes.

Our Environmentally Responsible Business

The Isle of Eriska treats all partners and suppliers with courtesy and respect, aiming to develop a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership. We will only work with suppliers who operate in line with our own ethos in terms on environment, ethical and social policies.

We are continuously striving to discover new ways of becoming increasingly more sustainable in our practices and will ever be evolving this practice. While this policy is by no means a final list of aims and actions, we are all passionately committed to minimising our negative impact on the environment and aim to make a continuous positive change to our local environment.
